The New American Dream: Renting a One Bedroom Apartment

Tongue-in-cheek, rage-bait title? Check! I was reading the news this morning (I know, I try not to but sometimes boredom takes hold of me) and saw an article critiquing a TikTok-er (TikTokker… TikTokist? May be irrelevant since the platform is about to be banned in the US) who went viral for saying the American Dream is dead because he makes 3 times the Federal minimum wage and can’t afford to rent a one-bedroom apartment.

True, Sorta

Three times the Federal minimum wage is still only $21, which is roughly $43,000 a year, so no-one in a reasonable state of mind would suggest this is enough money to live on.

I could start ranting about how the Federal minimum wage of $7.25 isn’t even enough to afford food for a week, but I don’t think any serious person pays attention to this figure. Contrary to what unintelligent children like Nic Sumners (referenced in the story I’m discussing) claim, the Federal minimum wage isn’t supposed to be average. It’s the lowest legal wage that can be paid and very few people actually make $7.25 an hour.

Nic Sumners is Our Proposed Protagonist

Nic is a 20-something man sporting a retarded mustache and 3/4 of a mullet who works in the “car industry”. I don’t know what exactly he does, but based on his apparent low IQ he isn’t a supervisor or on a track to become one.

Nic is an Idiot

Right out of the gate, Sumners says in his video that he didn’t want to go to college because he didn’t want to be saddled with debt. This is a provably stupid opinion, but it only hurts the people who hold it so most of us let it go.

I owe $52,000 in student loans and I pay about $50 a month toward them; this is less than some of my app subscriptions. On the flip side, my income tripled after graduating college. Do I seem to be “saddled with debt”? Obviously not.

Nic Refuses to Get a Second Job

There are two ways to increase your income: work a second (or third) job or get a better job. Nic most likely can’t get a better job because he didn’t go to college and there aren’t a lot of uneducated people making more than $22 an hour. He also doesn’t want to get a second job because doesn’t want to be burnt out. Instead, his solution is to complain online for free.

Don’t Be Like Nic

People who claim college is a “scam” or make similar false claims about it are only trying to hide the fact they’re too lazy to go. Nic is a stupid man, but one doesn’t need to be intelligent to graduate from college. There are millions of idiots with bachelor’s degrees and even master’s degrees in the world.

If you aren’t willing to do anything about your situation except complain about it on social media, it’s only your loss. You’re removing yourself from the pool of competitors for the rest of us, so thank you for that I guess.

One response to “The New American Dream: Renting a One Bedroom Apartment”

  1. I think it’s a complicated situation and with degrees it depends on what you study when it comes to finding work. Some really help, some don’t. I think Nic is simplifying things too much and hasn’t done a lot of research.
